Even today, between the Parma and Enza valleys, we find traces of ancient routes that ascended the ridge to cross the Apennines, connecting their slopes—or, more closely, joining the side valleys.

The main route is the historic route that reaches Tuscany via the Lagastrello Pass, a path known as the Via di Linari, the same name as the Abbey whose ruins still testify to its great importance in the past.

These routes carried goods and merchants, ideas, and pilgrims on their way to Rome. Today, those same routes accompany us on an extraordinary journey through time!

Regions crossed: Continuing with the Via Francigena, which originates in Lombardy, it crosses Emilia to reach Tuscany, Aulla, and then continues on to Rome.

Since 2016, it has been part of the Emilia-Romagna Region's Pilgrimage Routes www.camminiemiliaromagna.it

Route: Following the Parma River, it passes the magnificent Torrechiara Castle, which, with its Benedictine monastery, marks the northwest entrance to the large UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. After crossing the river, it passes the important town of Badia Cavana and continues up to the Parmossa Valley, passing through Costa and Tizzano, to reach the Enza Valley.

Ascending, the route leads into the Valli dei Cavalieri (Knights' Valleys) to relive the memory of the milites or knights: a sort of feudal lordship exercised by various branches of the Da Vallisnera family. This consortium, where various vassal families exercised control like a clan system, gave its name to the terrae militum, or lands of the knights who, among other things, supplied warhorses to the Municipality of Parma. Later renamed vallis militum and Valli de’ Cavaglieri, they still retain this ancient name today.

Upon reaching Malpasso, as the Lagastrello Pass was known, the pilgrims began the direct journey to Rome, descending the Taverone River to Aulla (Aguilla – the 31st stage of the Francigena itinerary). The people of the valley also held a deeply rooted cult of the Holy Face of Lucca, which they reached via the Comano road towards Fivizzano. Traces of one of them, or rather the image of one of them, remain in the carved ashlar near the Rimagna Chapel, which depicts a figure with a staff and the typical pilgrim's robes, and the inscription "Peligr[inus]."

Length: 162 km.

It is divided into 9 stages:

Stage 2. Parma - Torrechiara. Distance: 18.5 km
