Archaeological Parma: a dive into the past

In this itinerary we will discover some places of archaeological Parma, a city with very ancient origins that date back to 183 BC along the Via Emilia. Of these origins, the "checkerboard" arrangement is still visible in some areas of the historical center and the arrangement with the cardo, that coincides with Via Cavour and Via Farini, and the decumanus, that coincides with the Via Emilia. Piazza Garibaldi, located in between, in Roman times housed the forum, the theater and the amphitheater. 

Continuing the search for the oldest finds, the Roman bridge, a stone's throw from Piazza Garibaldi and adjacent to the ancient Piazza Ghiaia, has been brought to light and placed in a space that sees the exhibition of over 170 finds from the Archaeological Museum of Parma.

From here, in a short time you arrive at Palazzo della Pilotta, inside which you can visit the new wing of the Archaeological Museum with the Ceramics Room and the Egyptian Room, an immersive environment that evokes the burial chambers from which these millenary finds came and where the corridor alludes to the journey into the belly of the earth that characterizes the necropolis of Luxor. These new spaces are part of a larger project that involves the reopening of other rooms. A new space not to be missed!
But inside the Monumental Complex of the Pilotta, a visit to the National Gallery and the Farnese Theater is a must.

Now we head towards the religious heart of the city, Piazza Duomo, where the Diocesan Museum houses a section of the late Roman walls dating back to the end of the 3rd century AC and early Christian finds, coins, Roman stuccos and early medieval ceramics.
Here, next to the museum, two jewels to include in your visit are the beautiful Cathedral of Romanesque origins and the Baptistery, built between 1196 and 1216.

Finally, we find a very fascinating place outside the city, it is the Votive Bath Museum in Noceto about 15 km from Parma. Here, a large rectangular basin contains many ceramic, wood and vegetable fiber objects attributable to the Terramare culture, which dates back to around the period between about 1650 and 1150 BC.
